Thyroid cancer treatment shifts toward personalized biological approaches

Medical experts emphasize that thyroid cancer should no longer be treated as a single, uniform disease. Because tumors within the gland exhibit diverse biological behaviors, aggressiveness levels, and prognoses, treatment approaches must be highly individualized to avoid unnecessary surgeries.

Dr. César Canales Bedoya, head of General and Digestive Surgery at Hospital Ruber Internacional, notes that modern oncology focuses on understanding the specific biological characteristics of a lesion rather than just its presence. Advances in molecular biology, genetics, and pathology, alongside high-resolution ultrasound and fine-needle aspiration (FNA), allow for much more precise characterization of these tumors.

This shift in understanding means that biological knowledge is now considered as vital as the surgical procedure itself. By gathering detailed information before making clinical decisions, doctors can better adapt treatments to the specific needs of each patient, distinguishing between more common differentiated carcinomas and more aggressive, poorly differentiated types.
