Thyroid health diagnostic advancements and prevention efforts

The Thyroid Nodular Pathology Unit at the Hospital General Universitario Santa Lucía in Cartagena has established itself as a regional reference for diagnosing and monitoring thyroid conditions. As the first specialized unit of its kind in the Murcia region, it utilizes standardized international criteria, such as the ACR-TIRADS classification, to improve diagnostic precision.

The unit is notable for performing fine-needle aspiration (FNA) procedures with immediate assessment and direct coordination with the Pathology Service. This integrated approach aims to improve early detection of thyroid cancer and increase clinical efficiency. More than 80 percent of the patients treated are women.

In a separate context regarding thyroid health awareness, efforts have been made to promote prevention and timely diagnosis of hypothyroidism. In Mexico, where chronic diseases are a major health challenge, hypothyroidism affects an estimated 1 to 2 percent of the population, though many cases remain undiagnosed due to symptoms like fatigue and weight gain being mistaken for stress.
