Thyroid Hormone Imbalance: Causes, Symptoms and Natural Management

The thyroid gland, a small butterfly‑shaped organ in the neck, produces the hormones triiodothyronine (T3) and thyroxine (T4) that regulate metabolism, heart rate, body temperature and energy use. When it produces too little, hypothyroidism can cause fatigue, weight gain, constipation, depression, cold sensitivity and muscle weakness; when it produces too much, hyperthyroidism may lead to rapid weight loss, anxiety, rapid heartbeat and tremors.

Common causes of an underactive thyroid include autoimmune attack (Hashimoto’s thyroiditis), iodine or zinc deficiencies, and certain medications. Women, especially those over 40, are more likely to develop thyroid disorders, which can also affect menstrual cycles, fertility and pregnancy outcomes. The condition often co‑exists with diabetes, making blood‑sugar control more difficult.

Early detection through blood tests and consultation with a thyroid specialist is advised. Lifestyle and dietary adjustments, such as ensuring adequate iodine and zinc intake, are frequently recommended as part of a natural approach to managing thyroid health.
