Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum hosts Dalí Freud exhibition
The Thyssen-Bornemisza National Museum in Madrid has launched a new exhibition titled ‘El universo freudiano de Dalí’ (Dalí’s Freudian Universe). Curated by art historian Jaime Brihuega, the exhibition explores the profound connection between the surrealist painter Salvador Dalí and the psychoanalytic theories of Sigmund Freud.
The collection features approximately 130 works, including paintings, drawings, sculptures, and videos sourced from various European and North American institutions. The exhibition is organized into chronological sections that trace Dalí’s life from his complex childhood to his later years, illustrating how Freud’s writings—specifically ‘The Interpretation of Dreams’—helped Dalí transform personal traumas, obsessions, and desires into a unique visual language of symbols.
In addition to Dalí’s work, the exhibition includes pieces by intellectual contemporaries such as Pablo Picasso, Max Ernst, Jean Arp, and Santiago Ramón y Cajal, placing Dalí’s production within a broader network of historical avant-garde influences. The exhibition is scheduled to remain on display in Madrid until January 24, 2027.
