Tianjin bank opens China's first marriage registration point

A new marriage registration point has opened at a Postal Savings Bank of China branch in the Hexi District of Tianjin, marking the first of its kind in mainland China. The initiative is a collaboration between the Tianjin Hexi District Civil Affairs Bureau and the bank, where the bank provides the venue while civil affairs officials manage the actual registration process.

To encourage marriage amid declining national marriage rates, the registration site offers themed services, including a ceremony, customized bank cards featuring couple photos, and a “7-year time capsule” mail service. The move reflects a strategic shift for banks to transform physical branches from simple transaction hubs into community service centers to attract customers through high-frequency life events.

While some users praised the convenience and romantic atmosphere, others criticized the move as “not doing their proper job,” suggesting banks should focus on improving core financial service efficiency. The initiative comes as China faces record-low marriage numbers, with data showing a significant year-on-year decline in registrations.
