Tianwan Nuclear Plant in China to become world’s largest with new VVER‑1200 reactors

Russia's state nuclear corporation Rosatom and Chinese partners have begun commissioning unit 7 of the Tianwan Nuclear Power Plant on the Jiangsu coast. The plant, built with VVER‑1200 Generation III+ reactors, will reach a total output of 9 GW when units 7 and 8 are operational, making it the largest nuclear facility by capacity worldwide. The reactors are designed for a service life of about six decades, aim to meet the rising electricity demand of eastern China's industrial hubs and are expected to cut carbon emissions significantly.

Rosatom executive Alexey Likhachev highlighted the project as a benchmark for international nuclear cooperation, noting the integrated safety systems and passive safety features of the VVER‑1200 design. The expansion underscores China’s push for clean‑energy growth and Russia’s role in exporting advanced nuclear technology.
