Tibet earthquake hits Nagqu region following deadly Nepal landslides

A magnitude 5.0 earthquake struck the Nagqu region of Tibet on Thursday evening, occurring at a depth of approximately 10 kilometers. This follows a magnitude 4.7 tremor recorded in the same region the previous day.

These seismic activities follow a catastrophic mudflow and landslide that struck the border region between Nepal and Tibet on Wednesday. The disaster has resulted in at least 359 confirmed deaths, with over 1,300 people reported missing, including at least 653 foreigners. The landslide destroyed critical infrastructure, including roads, bridges, and hydroelectric plants.

While initial reports suggested the landslide might have been triggered by an earthquake, the USGS determined that a massive landslide near Kodari, Nepal, generated a seismic signal equivalent to a magnitude 5.2 earthquake. Chinese leader Xi Jinping has called for intensified search efforts and the strengthening of early warning systems for natural disasters.
