Tibet film depicts historical resistance during Dalai Lama escape

The historical drama “Four Rivers Six Ranges” explores the story of Tibetan resistance fighters who assisted the Dalai Lama during his 1959 escape from Tibet. Filmed in the Mustang region of Nepal, the movie aims to preserve Tibetan history and identity at a time when international attention on the region is declining.

Actor Tenzin Rigzin Phurpatsang, whose grandfather was a guerrilla fighter killed by Chinese forces, noted the personal connection to the film’s themes. Director Shenpenn Khymsar emphasized the importance of Tibetans telling their own historical narratives.

The film’s Indian theatrical release was delayed following a visit by Chinese President Xi Jinping to India, occurring amidst a period of cautious diplomatic repair between the two nations. Chinese state media has criticized the production, accusing it of promoting separatism and rewriting history, while maintaining that Tibet is an integral part of China.
