Tibetan activist's family meets US official to urge action

The family of Pawo Lobga Rangzen, a Tibetan activist who self-immolated outside the United Nations headquarters on July 2, 2026, met with US Special Coordinator for Tibetan Issues Riley Barnes. During the meeting, the family briefed the official on Lobga’s final message and the circumstances of his death, urging continued US attention to human rights in Tibet.

The Tibetan Youth Congress (TYC) also participated in the briefing, outlining efforts to honor Lobga’s message through peaceful advocacy. The TYC urged the US government to raise the issue of Tibet with Chinese President Xi Jinping during his upcoming visit.

In Dharamshala, India, the Tibetan community held a prayer service at the Tsuglagkhang Temple to mark the 49th day of mourning for the activist. The service included Buddhist monks and community members honoring Lobga, who was also known as Lobsang Palden or Lobga Rangza.
