Tibetan community faces alleged harassment over China's ethnic unity law

Members of the Tibetan community are reportedly facing surveillance and harassment by Chinese citizens in response to opposition against China's Ethnic Unity and Progress Law. A Tibetan resident in New Zealand, Gaden, reported that individuals have been observed taking photos of community members from a distance to exert pressure.

The New Zealand Security Intelligence Service (SIS) corroborated concerns regarding foreign interference in its latest threat assessment, stating that migrant communities in the country are being targeted by foreign states to restrict their democratic rights and freedoms.

Gaden described the law as an attempt to eradicate Tibetan culture, noting that traditional prayer flags are being removed, burned, or trampled in Tibet. He also highlighted the extreme desperation within the community, citing a recent incident where an individual died by self-immolation near the United Nations headquarters in New York to protest the law.
