Tibetan Plateau glaciers face rapid decline amid rising disaster risks

Recent ice and rock avalanches along the China-Nepal border have highlighted the increasing danger of warming glaciers. Experts warn that these melting glaciers are becoming potential triggers for severe natural disasters.

Research indicates that glacier-related disasters are increasing in both frequency and severity due to global warming. On the Tibetan Plateau, glacier area has significantly decreased from 51,000 km² over the last 60 years to just 39,000 km² today. Conversely, the number and size of glacial lakes in the region increased by more than 20% between 1990 and 2020.

Since 2015, sudden glacial incidents have occurred frequently across wide areas, signaling instability that threatens high-mountain ecosystems. Scientists note that rising temperatures and extreme rainfall fluctuations are directly impacting the structural integrity of these ancient ice masses.
