Tibetan representatives raise human rights concerns in Geneva

Tibetan representatives have completed a week-long diplomatic outreach campaign in Geneva to address the human rights situation in Tibet ahead of the 63rd Session of the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC).

Between August 17 and 24, the delegation, including Thinlay Chukki and Phuntsok Topgyal, met with officials from more than 32 countries, European Union member states, and representatives from the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights. The discussions focused on religious freedom, cultural rights, environmental issues, and policies impacting Tibetan identity.

A central point of the campaign was the death of activist Lobga Rangzen, who self-immolated in New York in July 2026 to protest Chinese policies in Tibet. The delegation also raised concerns regarding China’s Law on Promoting Ethnic Unity and Progress, arguing that such policies may undermine distinct ethnic identities.
