Tibetan Women’s Association protests China’s Ethnic Unity Law in India

The Tibetan Women’s Association (TWA) organised a silent protest on 7 August in McLeodganj, Dharamshala, Himachal Pradesh, India. Participants wore black masks to symbolise the United Nations’ silence and condemned China’s newly enacted Law on Promoting Ethnic Unity and Progress, which took effect on 1 July 2026. TWA spokesperson Tenzin Yingsel said the law seeks to erase Tibetan language, culture and identity, describing it as a mask for cultural assimilation.

The protest referenced the self‑immolation of Tibetan activist Lobga Rangzen in front of the United Nations headquarters in New York a day after the law’s implementation. TWA executive member Tenzin Dolma added that the law aims to assimilate Tibet’s unique identity. The demonstrators called on the international community and the UN to take concrete action rather than remain silent.
