Tibor Szendrei: The influence of an illustrator on Hungarian fantasy and history

Artist and graphic designer Tibor Szendrei is recognized for his significant contributions to Hungarian literature through his illustrations. Originally gaining prominence in the science fiction and fantasy genres, particularly through works published by Cherubion (now Delta Vision) in Debrecen, Szendrei’s style is noted for its colorful and imaginative approach to fantasy worlds.

Beyond genre fiction, Szendrei has applied his artistic skill to historical subjects, creating works depicting major figures and events in Hungarian history. His illustrations have also been featured in educational textbooks and in collections of traditional Hungarian folk tales, such as the works of Elek Benedek, bridging the gap between adult fantasy art and children's literature.
