Tick-borne disease risks and prevention challenges

Tick populations and the associated risk of diseases like Lyme disease present a significant public health challenge. Research indicates that approximately 476,000 Americans are treated for Lyme disease annually, with medical costs ranging from $2,227 for standard episodes to nearly $7,000 for disseminated disease.

While many assume tick bites occur in deep woods, data from the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station suggests that 75% of bites happen during routine yard activities. Nymph ticks, which are extremely small, are responsible for 98% of these bites. Experts suggest that common yard habits, such as allowing grass to grow longer than three inches, can create breeding grounds by providing surfaces for ticks to “quest” for hosts.

Efforts to completely eradicate ticks face major practical hurdles. Large-scale chemical use poses risks to pollinators, pets, and humans, and is often prohibitively expensive. Because species like blacklegged and lone-star ticks utilize a wide variety of hosts—including deer, rodents, and birds—and move through dense suburban areas, total elimination is considered nearly impossible. Consequently, researchers are shifting focus toward targeted strategies, such as bait stations for rodents and deer, to reduce tick density near human habitats without causing broad environmental damage.
