Tick-borne encephalitis cases rise sharply in Finland

Cases of tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) have increased significantly in Finland during the current summer. According to the infectious disease register and data from welfare areas, approximately 338 to 340 cases have been identified this year, compared to 240 cases in the entirety of last year.

Regional data shows notable increases in several areas. Uusimaa has recorded 130 cases, while Northern Ostrobothnia has seen 50, Northern Savonia has 45, and Southwest Finland has 35. Most individuals diagnosed had either not received the TBE vaccine or had an incomplete vaccination series.

Medical professionals note that while symptoms vary in severity, the increase is placing higher demands on hospital care. While many patients are working-age adults, cases have also been reported in children and young adults. Although many cases are mild, severe inflammation can require intensive care or extended rehabilitation.
