IFPI and RIAA Unveil Global AI-Generated Music Labeling Framework
The International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI) and the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), together with seven other music‑industry bodies—including the Grammy organization, SAG‑AFTRA, A2IM, WIN, IMPALA and the Human Artistry Campaign—announced a voluntary two‑tier labeling system for AI‑generated music. The tags, “AI Generated” for tracks created primarily by generative AI and “AI Assisted” for recordings where AI played a supporting role, are intended to give listeners transparent information and to be adopted by streaming services worldwide.
Streaming platforms such as Deezer and Spotify have already developed tools to identify AI‑created content, and the Digital Media Association (DIMA), which represents services like Apple Music, Amazon Music and Spotify, said it will monitor the rollout and seek detailed AI metadata. Meanwhile, TIDAL introduced its own AI‑music policy, pledging to label wholly AI‑generated tracks and to exclude them from royalty payments, while also blocking impersonation and fraudulent uploads. Responses from industry groups include DiMA’s call for accurate metadata, Suno’s emphasis on artist‑controlled decisions, and Deezer’s public support for a unified framework.
The initiative aims to scale globally, offering a standardized, metadata‑driven approach that could become a norm for digital music distribution.
