Tiergarten Kleve confirms two female red panda cubs are thriving

Two red panda cubs born at Tiergarten Kleve on June 21, 2026, are thriving following their first comprehensive veterinary health check. The examination confirmed that both offspring are female.

The cubs, born to parents Kamala and Janak, have been microchipped and received deworming treatments. Zoo director and veterinarian Dr. Martin Polotzek reported that the young pandas are developing well and are beginning to show curiosity about their surroundings, though they still spend most of their time in a protected den.

This birth is considered a significant success for the European Endangered Species Programme (EEP), aimed at maintaining a genetically diverse population of the species, which is currently classified as critically endangered due to habitat loss in the Himalayas and Southwest China. To celebrate, the zoo is hosting a ‘Red Panda Weekend’ on September 19 and 20, 2026.
