Tierra Bonita challenges anonymity of La Palma aid recipients

The Tierra Bonita association is challenging the Canary Islands government's decision to withhold the identities of individuals receiving economic compensation following the 2021 La Palma volcanic eruption. The association argues that the confidentiality of these beneficiaries is “unjustified” and was not a demand of the victims, nor was it part of the original legislative initiative for the Canary Islands Volcano Law.

The government maintains that disclosing the identities would reveal the previous economic status of the recipients. The dispute has entered the judicial system after the regional government appealed a requirement from the Transparency Commissioner of the Canary Islands to make the information public. Additionally, parliamentary opposition has filed a legal challenge against the executive's refusal to provide the data.
