Tierra del Fuego and INTA partner to combat invasive plant species
The Ministry of Production and Environment of Tierra del Fuego has signed an agreement with the National Institute of Agricultural Technology (INTA) to combat the spread of Hieracium pilosella, an invasive plant species known locally as velocilla or pilosela.
The invasive plant poses a significant threat to the northern region of Tierra del Fuego, particularly to sheep farming, as it can reduce forage biomass by up to 90% and displace native species. The 12-month research project aims to develop a bioherbicide using microorganisms, specifically studying a subgroup of cyanobacteria capable of inhibiting weed growth.
The provincial government will fund the project with an investment of approximately 43 million pesos, managed through the Federal Investment Council (CFI). INTA will provide specialized personnel and manage the necessary authorizations for accessing required genetic resources.
