Tierra del Fuego development history explored in new book

Dr. Mariano Hermida, rector of the Universidad Nacional de Tierra del Fuego (UNTDF), has presented his new book, ‘El desarrollo en cuestión. La construcción social de Tierra del Fuego (1970-2015)’. The work examines over four decades of economic, social, and institutional transformations within the province.

Presented at the ‘Malvinas Argentinas’ Campus in Río Grande, the research covers the period from industrial expansion and repopulation to the emergence of tourism and other local strategies. The book addresses critical tensions regarding the province's development model, specifically focusing on issues of inequality, instability, and dependency, while questioning the role and effectiveness of state public policies.

Academic contributors Dr. Nadia Finck and Mg. Ariel Farías provided commentary during the event, noting that the work provides a critical lens for understanding the past and present to inform future research and local development.
