Tierra del Fuego faces legislative debate over education funding and public employment growth
The Tierra del Fuego Legislature is approaching a critical session on October 28 to decide the future of a proposed Education Financing project. Introduced by Governor Gustavo Melella, the initiative seeks new resources to meet salary commitments made to the SUTEF union. The debate is complicated by a fragile economic context characterized by declining private employment and industrial difficulties, raising concerns about increased tax pressure on struggling sectors.
Simultaneously, data from the National Directorate of Provincial Affairs reveals a significant expansion of the provincial public workforce under the Melella administration. Since 2019, public positions in Tierra del Fuego have increased from 19,004 to 25,618, a 34.8% rise. The province currently maintains 139.1 state positions per 1,000 inhabitants, which is approximately 2.8 times the Argentine national average of 49.7.
