Tierra del Fuego faces low tax revenue and rising household debt

Tierra del Fuego is facing significant fiscal and personal financial challenges. Legislative discussions regarding provincial education funding have highlighted that rural property tax revenue reached only 5 million pesos last year. Legislator Luciano Selzer noted that the tax base has not been updated in several years, leading to minimal contributions to provincial accounts.

Simultaneously, data from July 2026 indicates a high level of household debt in the province. Approximately 102,981 residents hold financial obligations totaling 878.7 billion pesos. Of this amount, 179.4 billion pesos are in arrears, meaning 27.3% of surveyed individuals are in default.

Debt is concentrated in major cities, with Río Grande recording 16,660 people in default and Ushuaia recording 11,330. Approximately 70% of those with payment delays are aged 45 or younger. In response to the economic pressure on families, Gustavo Ventura has proposed a refinancing program through the Banco de Tierra del Fuego to alleviate the burden of installments and restore consumer capacity.
