Tierra del Fuego protests British tanker docking in Ushuaia
The Government of Tierra del Fuego has issued a strong repudiation regarding the presence of the VS Promise, a British-flagged oil tanker, at the Port of Ushuaia. Provincial authorities argue that the vessel's operation is incompatible with national sovereignty claims over the Malvinas, South Georgia, and South Sandwich Islands.
The controversy is heightened by the fact that the Port of Ushuaia has been under national intervention by the National Agency of Ports and Navigation (ANPyN) since January 20. Provincial officials claim this intervention, originally justified as a measure to protect strategic interests in the South Atlantic, has instead facilitated operations that contradict those very sovereignty principles.
Satellite tracking indicates the VS Promise loaded crude oil at the Río Cullen terminal in the northern part of the province before docking in Ushuaia. While the province has challenged the legality of the port intervention in court, the national government, through spokesperson Adrián Ravier, maintains that the vessel's presence does not violate any laws or pose a risk to Argentina, stating that the provincial restrictions specifically target vessels involved in resource exploitation within the Malvinas Basin.
Local legislators have also called for transparency, demanding that the national government disclose the political and administrative criteria used to authorize the tanker's entry into the port.
