Tierra del Fuego researchers study spiny dogfish species

Researchers from CADIC-CONICET, the National University of Tierra del Fuego (UNTDF), and the Fundación Por el Mar have published a study on the spiny dogfish (Squalus acanthias) in the waters of Tierra del Fuego. The research, featured in the scientific journal La Lupa, examines the biological characteristics, reproductive habits, and vulnerability of this medium-sized shark species.

Adapted to temperate and cold waters, the spiny dogfish inhabits depths ranging from coastal areas to approximately 900 meters. The species is characterized by a slender body, pointed snout, large eyes, and two dorsal fins equipped with venomous spines. While males typically reach about one meter in length, females can grow to 1.25 meters.

The study also highlights the historical connection between local indigenous communities and the species, noting that original inhabitants referred to the shark as ‘Kaïss’ or ‘Kaïgiss’.
