Tierra del Fuego seeks to strengthen South Atlantic presence
The province of Tierra del Fuego is pursuing initiatives to bolster Argentina's presence in strategic areas of the South Atlantic. During discussions at the Federal Fisheries Council, provincial authorities proposed advancing the administration of the Yaganes Marine Protected Area. This proposal, supported by the national agency, may also include the Namuncurá–Banco Burdwood area to establish mechanisms for conservation, scientific research, surveillance, and fisheries regulation.
In addition to environmental protection, these efforts aim to strengthen Argentina's geopolitical standing in southern waters. Complementing these maritime goals, infrastructure projects in Ushuaia, such as the Integrated Naval Base, are expected to drive significant economic growth and job creation in the region, positioning the city as a key logistical hub for Antarctic operations.
