Argentina faces historic mental health crisis as suicide rates rise

Argentina is facing a significant mental health crisis, with the Observatorio de Política Criminal reporting that 2025 saw the highest suicide rate in the country's history. The rate reached 11.8 per 100,000 inhabitants, a figure that triples the national homicide rate and represents the leading cause of death for young adults aged 15 to 34.

National Security Minister Alejandra Monteoliva confirmed a 30% increase in suicides within the security forces in 2025 compared to 2024. She identified formal and informal indebtedness among personnel as a key contributing factor, noting that many members are the sole formal earners for their families. The government is working with the Ministry of Defense and the economic team to address these financial pressures.

Regional responses are emerging across the country. In Tierra del Fuego, health authorities are implementing intersectoral strategies involving justice, education, and security sectors to improve early detection. In Entre Ríos, the city of Concordia has declared a one-year state of Sanitary Urgency in Mental Health to strengthen public response. Meanwhile, in Chubut, authorities have identified Comodoro Rivadavia as a high-prevalence area for mental health crises.
