Tierra del Fuego teachers maintain indefinite strike over wages
The teacher strike in Tierra del Fuego has entered its most significant phase in a decade, with the Sindicato Unificado de Trabajadores de la Educación Fueguina (SUTEF) maintaining an indefinite strike and encampments. Protesters are demanding a salary recomposition to reach the minimum living wage and the cessation of financial sanctions applied to striking workers.
Union leaders have criticized the provincial government for delaying negotiations and failing to convene a collective bargaining table. In addition to wage demands, the union is calling for increased investment in public education and the implementation of an Educational Financing Law to address infrastructure and budgetary crises.
The conflict has gained national attention, receiving support from the national leadership of ATE and the Frente de Sindicatos Unidos (FreSU). While Governor Gustavo Melella has called for a return to classes, union representatives maintain that current salary offers are insufficient to combat the loss of purchasing power.
