Tierra del Fuego university releases films on dictatorship memory

The National University of Tierra del Fuego (UNTDF) has released a diptych of animated short films titled ‘Tierra del Fuego, 1976’ to address historical gaps regarding the impact of the last civic-military dictatorship in the region.

Developed by UNTDF Medios, the project utilizes research from Gabriela Fernández and Esteban Rodríguez of the Institute of Culture, Society, and State (ICSE-UNTDF). The films aim to visualize experiences of repression and surveillance that occurred when the area was still a National Territory.

Researcher Gabriela Fernández noted that while the region may not have hosted clandestine detention centers or experienced the same intensity of repression as major urban centers, the permanent presence of the Armed Forces resulted in a constant militarization and control of daily life.
