Tiffany & Co. sparks controversy in Chengdu over compensation offer
A customer service controversy involving Tiffany & Co. in Chengdu, China, has drawn significant social media attention. The incident began after a VIP customer, who spent over 200,000 yuan on diamond jewelry, reported that a promised gift of mooncakes was mistakenly sent to another client. The customer further alleged that staff members engaged in “harassment-style apologies,” contacting her repeatedly even late at night.
Public backlash intensified when the luxury brand’s proposed compensation was a bag of peach blossom cakes purchased by weight from a local budget bakery, valued at approximately $2.78. This perceived lack of professionalism led to a surge of interest in the local shop, Cung Dinh Bakery, located near Wenshu Monastery.
Rather than suffering from the association with a “cheap” compensation gesture, the bakery experienced an influx of curious customers. The shop managed the situation through a subtle social media response, humorously noting that “now everyone knows our cakes are packed in plastic bags,” while clarifying that most of their products are actually sold in gift boxes. This approach allowed the small business to leverage the viral moment and defend its brand image without directly criticizing the luxury retailer.
