TİGEM achieves success with Angus cattle project in Iğdır

The General Directorate of Agricultural Enterprises (TİGEM) has reported significant success with its open-pasture Angus cattle breeding project at the Kazımkarabekir Agricultural Enterprise in Iğdır. The project utilizes a model similar to livestock farming in Uruguay, Brazil, and Texas, USA, to address Turkey's red meat requirements.

Supported by the Ministry of National Defense, the initiative also serves a strategic purpose: the Angus cattle's unique digestive and oral structures allow them to consume shrubby vegetation that can hinder border security. By clearing these plants, the project aims to mitigate security vulnerabilities in the region.

TİGEM General Manager Dr. Hasan Gezginç noted that while there are local prejudices against the Angus breed, the animals are highly suitable for Turkey's conditions. He highlighted their ability to utilize nutrients that other animals cannot, leading to rapid and high-quality meat production. The cattle population in the project has reached levels near 20,000, with animals also being distributed to local producers.
