Tiger sharks serve as vital ocean scavengers

Tiger sharks are recognized as one of the ocean's most resilient and large predators, earning the nickname “garbage cans of the ocean” due to their highly varied and non-selective diet. Their consumption habits include a wide range of marine life such as mollusks, stingrays, sea snakes, seals, squid, whales, and seabirds. Notably, their stomachs have also contained terrestrial animals like dogs, goats, cats, antelopes, and rats.

Due to their lack of selectivity, tiger sharks frequently ingest human-made debris, including plastic bags, cigarettes, tires, televisions, and car parts. Despite being classified as one of the “Big Three” dangerous shark species alongside the great white and bull shark, attacks on humans remain infrequent.

Beyond their predatory reputation, tiger sharks play a vital ecological role by consuming dead, injured, or sick animals, which helps maintain the health and balance of marine ecosystems. Research conducted by Neil Hammerschlag and his team in Grand Bahama has also tracked their behavior during significant weather events, such as Hurricane Matthew in 2016.
