Tigray conflict: At least 17 killed in Ethiopian airstrikes

At least 17 people have been killed following overnight airstrikes and artillery fire in Ethiopia’s Tigray region. Humanitarian sources report that nine deaths occurred in Adwa and eight in Sheraro.

The violence comes as fighting between Ethiopian federal forces and the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) enters its second week. Over the weekend, federal forces took control of the regional capital, Mekelle. The TPLF, which seeks to overthrow Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s government, has warned it will continue to fight using guerrilla tactics.

Analysts warn the situation could escalate into a broader regional conflict. Ethiopia has accused neighboring Eritrea, Sudan, and Egypt of supporting the armed opposition, though all three nations have denied these claims. Tensions between Ethiopia and Eritrea have already led to the severance of diplomatic ties last week.

In response to the crisis, leaders from Egypt, Eritrea, Sudan, and Somalia reportedly met to discuss the situation, agreeing to coordinate military and intelligence efforts should the conflict reach their shared borders.
