Tigray residents face uncertainty as daily life resumes in Mekelle
In Mekelle, Ethiopia, shops and banks are gradually reopening, signaling a partial return to normalcy following the retaking of the Tigray regional capital by Ethiopian federal forces and allied fighters on October 4. However, residents face significant economic and security anxieties.
A severe funding crisis continues to impact the region. In March, Tigray’s interim administration reported it could not cover monthly salaries for approximately 137,000 civil servants due to missing federal budget transfers. By April, the regional finance bureau identified an 8.5-billion-birr funding shortfall affecting both development projects and salary payments.
The return of fighting has created instability for households already struggling with depleted savings from the 2020–2022 war. Beyond economic hardship, students in the region express fear that renewed conflict will cause further interruptions to their education.
