Young men in the Tigray region of Ethiopia are fleeing to cities like Addis Ababa to avoid forced military recruitment. This movement comes amid rising political and military tensions between the Ethiopian federal government and the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF).

Although the November 2022 Pretoria Agreement, brokered by the African Union, ended two years of war, several critical issues remain unresolved, including the disarmament of Tigrayan forces, the return of displaced persons, and disputes over territory. Human Rights Watch reported in July that Tigrayan authorities and forces have been forcibly recruiting civilians, including children as young as 15, since at least April. These recruitment efforts have reportedly targeted individuals from homes, workplaces, and gold-mining areas.

Both the federal government and the TPLF have accused one another of military mobilisation. Additionally, heavy fighting was reported near the border with Sudan in August.
