Tigre City Council rejects CONMEBOL fine over Malvinas flag

The Tigre City Council has unanimously approved a project expressing institutional support for Club Atlético Tigre and rejecting a sanction imposed by CONMEBOL. The South American Football Confederation fined the club 15,000 dollars and issued a disciplinary warning after the team displayed a flag reading “Las Malvinas son Argentinas” during a Copa Sudamericana match against Uruguay's Nacional.

The approved initiative, proposed by the La Libertad Avanza bloc, argues that the sanction is disproportionate. The council stated that a peaceful demonstration related to a mandate established in the Argentine National Constitution should not be considered a sporting infraction. While acknowledging that international competition regulations must be respected, the council maintained that their application must be “reasonable, proportional and compatible with fundamental freedoms.”
