Tigre councilor proposes ban on commercial animal sales

Sebastián Rovira, representing the Fuerza Patria Tigre bloc, has introduced a legislative proposal in the Tigre Deliberative Council to prohibit the commercial sale, exhibition, and intermediation of live animals throughout the district. The proposed ordinance aims to establish a Comprehensive Regime for the Protection and Welfare of Animals, covering both the mainland and the islands.

The initiative specifically targets commercial establishments such as pet shops and veterinary clinics, as well as breeding facilities intended for commercial purposes. If passed, the regulation would prevent these businesses from using their existing permits to sell or display animals. To enforce the measure, the project includes provisions for fines and potential closures, with revenue from sanctions earmarked exclusively for animal protection policies.

The proposal explicitly exempts non-profit adoptions conducted by public organisms, shelters, animal protection organizations, and rescuers. It also seeks to support those performing rescue work through a municipal registry of rescuers and assistance programs, promoting responsible adoption as an alternative to commercial transactions.
