TİHEK warns Turkish TV channels over disability accessibility
The Human Rights and Equality Institution of Turkey (TİHEK) has issued warnings to several television channels and the Radio and Television Supreme Council (RTÜK) regarding accessibility for disabled individuals.
Following an investigation, TİHEK determined that Kanal 7, ATV, Show TV, NOW TV, and Star TV failed to implement necessary accessibility features, such as audio descriptions for visually impaired viewers. The institution concluded that this lack of compliance constitutes indirect discrimination based on disability.
While TİHEK initially imposed administrative fines of 17,052 Turkish Lira on each of the involved channels and RTÜK, the board ultimately decided to convert these fines into warnings. Additionally, the institution has issued recommendations to RTÜK to address these accessibility shortcomings.
