Tijuana border mural honors women searching for disappeared persons

Artist Enrique Chiu, with support from Amnesty International Mexico, has created a mural titled ‘Buscar sin miedo’ (Search without fear) on the border wall in Playas de Tijuana. The artwork serves as a tribute to the families of the disappeared and the women activists who have dedicated themselves to searching for missing loved ones.

The mural was designed based on the lived experiences and stories of search collectives. It aims to highlight the social and legal obstacles faced by women searchers and to honor those who have lost their lives during the search process. Amnesty International Mexico noted that there are currently more than 134,000 disappeared persons in Mexico, a crisis that has forced many women to become human rights defenders.

The location on the Tijuana border wall was chosen to provide international visibility to both the domestic disappearance crisis and the plight of migrants whose whereabouts remain unknown while attempting to reach the United States.
