Tijuana education officials investigate student death caused by falling basketball hoop
The Secretariat of Education is launching an investigation into potential negligence following the death of 15-year-old Christopher Antonio González Armas in Tijuana. The student, from the CECyT Lázaro Cárdenas high school, died on September 21, 2026, after spending 17 days in the hospital due to severe head and eye injuries. The injuries occurred on September 4 when a basketball post and hoop fell on him while he was performing social service at the Amado Nervo elementary school.
Education Secretary Irma Martínez Manríquez acknowledged that parents and school staff had reported the need for facility maintenance since 2024. Authorities are currently determining whether responsibility for the lack of repairs lies with the Secretariat of Education or the school's administration.
In response to the incident, approximately 30 people gathered outside the school to protest and demand justice, calling for better facilities to prevent similar tragedies. As a precaution, local school officials suspended in-person classes to ensure the safety of students.
