Tijuana advances water reuse and infrastructure projects

The Secretariat of Economic Development of Tijuana (SEDETI) signed an agreement with beverage producer Bonafont to divert about 80 m³ of mineral‑rich water per day, unsuitable for drinking, for non‑potable uses such as park irrigation, construction, firefighting and industrial processes. The partnership is part of the “Second Life of Water” initiative aimed at circular water use and cost reduction.

The State Public Services Commission of Tijuana (CESPT) has replaced 3,676 linear metres of deteriorated sewage pipes with durable PVC, improving drainage and preventing blockages and sewage spills. The agency also restored water service to most of the city, with only 16 neighbourhoods still awaiting sufficient tank levels to resume supply.

Mexico’s National Water Commission (Conagua) reported that work on the Rio Tijuana sanitation project is 44 % complete, backed by a 3.4 billion‑peso investment. Eight ongoing works include new collector networks, pump stations and treatment plant upgrades to stop contaminant discharges into the river that flows into the United States.

In neighbouring Mexicali, the State Public Services Commission (CESPM) has reached 30 % physical progress on a sewer‑line replacement that will serve roughly 1,750 residents, adding a new storm‑water well and junction to improve public health.
