Tijuana faces housing crisis as 3,000 homes sit in high-risk landslide zones

More than 5,000 homes in Baja California are located in high-risk zones, with approximately 3,000 of those in Tijuana, according to the National Association of Professionals in Resilience (ANPROGERI). In the Sánchez Taboada neighborhood, five major landslides since 2015 have affected over 700 homes, many of which are marked with red or yellow warnings indicating a risk of collapse.

ANPROGERI has proposed the creation of a Commission for the Reconstruction of Families Affected by Landslides and a Secretariat for Integral Risk Management and Civil Protection to provide more resources and coordination beyond simple risk studies.

In response to the instability in Sánchez Taboada, Tijuana's Municipal Government Secretary, Ramón Vázquez Valadez, announced plans to reconstruct the Sánchez Taboada boulevard, a primary access road. The city is currently awaiting geotechnical study results from the National Center for Disaster Prevention (CENAPRED), which are expected within a month. Once received, the government will coordinate with state and federal authorities to begin rehabilitation work, a process estimated to take between 10 and 12 months.
