Tijuana intensifies drainage maintenance to prevent flooding

The Tijuana municipal government has intensified cleaning and maintenance operations on several desarenadores (sand traps) to prevent flooding ahead of the upcoming rainy season and potential effects from El Niño.

Key maintenance sites include the Aguaje de la Tuna desarenador in the Pedrera canyon, as well as the Johnsito desarenador in the Centro Delegation and the Pasteje Aviación 1 desarenador in the Otay Centenario Delegation. These efforts aim to benefit approximately 70,000 residents by ensuring the drainage systems can handle sediment and debris.

Authorities noted that recent rains have increased sediment accumulation, which is further complicated by large amounts of solid waste—including tires, furniture, and mattresses—discarded by citizens. Officials warned that blockages in these structures could lead to overflows, soil moisture issues, landslides, and damage to homes in low-lying areas near the Tijuana River drainage system.
