Tijuana reports 80% drop in extortion of US-plated vehicle drivers

Extortion reports against drivers with United States license plates in Tijuana have decreased by 80% to 90%, according to Olivaldo Paz Gómez, a representative of the National Chamber of Commerce (Canaco).

The reduction is attributed to two primary factors: the implementation of body cameras for police officers, which increases transparency and discourages irregular behavior, and the authorization of specific levels of window tinting, which has reduced the frequency of vehicle inspections that previously led to extortion complaints.

While the decline is seen as a positive development for the city's image and visitor confidence, business leaders emphasize the need to maintain supervision and surveillance mechanisms to prevent these practices from returning.
