Tijuana River sanitation initiative receives support from COPARMEX

The COPARMEX Tijuana Board of Directors has expressed support for a citizen-led initiative aimed at the sanitation of the Tijuana River. The initiative was presented by District Judge José Rivas González, who filed an amparo lawsuit (532/2026-D) following government inaction regarding river pollution.

A definitive suspension has been granted, ordering the National Water Commission (Conagua) and the Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection (Profepa) to implement inspection, sanitation, and ecological restoration measures. As a direct result of this legal action, Profepa recently closed a treatment plant linked to the Tijuana State Public Services Commission (CESPT) for lacking the necessary discharge permits from Conagua.

Elisa Ibáñez Aldana, president of COPARMEX Tijuana, noted that the resolution has prompted authorities across three levels of government to begin coordinating efforts to address the environmental issue.
