Tijuana to demolish aging pedestrian bridge over Paseo de Playas

The Tijuana municipal government is evaluating the demolition of a 20‑year‑old pedestrian bridge at the entrance to the Playas district. The bridge, built under a 2006 concession that expired in 2016, has not been maintained by the concessionaire, leading to rusted supports, missing lighting and hanging cables, posing safety risks for pedestrians.

Fernando Sánchez, head of Urban Administration, said the city will seek penalties for the concession holder, while Virginia Vargas, Secretary of Territorial Development, confirmed that legal procedures must be resolved before any demolition. The Municipal Civil Protection agency will assess the structure’s risk, and the Treasury and Inspection departments will determine sanctions. Advertisements currently displayed on the bridge are slated for removal.
