TikTok and Instagram driving global travel trends, TUI Musement study finds
A study by TUI Musement and Appinio reveals that social media platforms, particularly TikTok and Instagram, are fundamentally reshaping travel behavior across Europe, including Spain, Italy, and the United Kingdom.
Research shows that nearly half (48%) of Generation Z travelers use TikTok as their primary source of travel inspiration, often prioritizing content creators over recommendations from friends and family. The influence of viral content is significant, with 43% of all respondents reporting they have booked a trip or activity directly after seeing a viral post. This impact is even higher among Millennials, where 52% have made bookings based on digital content.
The study also highlights a shift in how people behave at destinations. Approximately 39% of travelers admitted to visiting specific tourist sites primarily to capture photos or videos. Furthermore, there is a growing trend of digital aesthetic pressure, with 37% of all respondents—and 45% of Gen Z—feeling the need to present their vacations as more attractive online than they were in reality. Analysts warn that this focus on visual trends can lead to overcrowding at popular locations while leaving other destinations overlooked.
