TikTok and YouTube update creator monetization and payout structures

TikTok and YouTube are implementing structural changes to their creator monetization programs to manage payout distributions and align with shifting viewership patterns.

TikTok’s Creator Rewards Program, which replaced the Creativity Program Beta, focuses on rewarding high-quality, engaging content rather than high video volume. To qualify, creators must be at least 18 years old, have 10,000 followers, and have earned 100,000 views in the last 30 days. The program specifically targets videos longer than one minute, reflecting a trend where users spend half their time on the app watching longer content. Payouts are determined by originality, play duration, search value, engagement, and ad watch time.

YouTube utilizes the YouTube Partner Program (YPP) to share ad revenue and subscription income with over 3 million creators. The program features a two-tier eligibility structure. The first tier requires 500 subscribers and either 3,000 watch hours or 3 million Shorts views to unlock fan funding and shopping features. The second tier, which unlocks full ad revenue sharing, requires 1,000 subscribers. YouTube has announced that significant structural changes to these requirements are expected in August 2026, with further changes slated for February 2027.
