TikTok creator faces online backlash over pregnancy diet
TikTok creator Laura Nyby Terp from Odense has faced significant backlash and hateful comments after sharing her pregnancy and diet with her 34,000 followers. The criticism specifically targeted her consumption of sushi, with some users accusing her of harming her unborn child. Terp clarified that she avoids ingredients advised against by the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration, such as tuna and seaweed salad.
This phenomenon, often referred to as ‘mother police’ on platforms like Instagram and TikTok, involves intense scrutiny of parenting choices, ranging from breastfeeding duration to how children are dressed. Lena Frischlich, a lecturer at the Digital Democracy Center at the University of Southern Denmark, notes that while the desire to protect a child's health is a normal impulse, much of the criticism stems from individuals viewing their own upbringing and methods as the only correct way to parent.
