TikTok creators use simulated drama to promote products via UGC

A growing trend of user-generated content (UGC) involves creators filming seemingly spontaneous personal dramas to promote products. One example involves TikTok creator Ceci Beck, who filmed videos appearing to capture painful breakups. In reality, Beck was happily engaged at the time and was paid over $800 to promote Aqua Voice, a speech-to-text application. The videos used the app's transcription widget to make the simulated relationship endings look like authentic social media posts.

This model allows brands to market products through smaller accounts rather than high-profile influencers, leveraging social media algorithms that prioritize user interests over follower counts. Nick Lawton, CEO of the UGC marketplace Sideshift, noted that this represents a new type of labor force where brands can pay everyday individuals to produce high volumes of content.
